New York City may be the Big Apple yet there is more to a family vacation in New York State than the glitz and glamour of the Empire City. Here are few treasures from the trove. View the voluminous Niagara Falls. Eyeball gorgeous gorges and great fall foliage in the area of the state known as Finger Lakes. Head to the Adirondack Mountains for every kind of outdoor recreation. Visit the Catskills and, in addition to discovering mysterious mountains, learn about the land of Rip Van Winkle. Pick apples and pick up history in the Hudson Valley. Take in beaches and boardwalks on Long Island. End the trip in New York City and let kids plan visit.

For exploring by car, arm yourself with an up-to-date atlas, such as the Rand McNally Road Atlas or the New York Atlas and Gazetteer by Delorme. Both are widely available from bookshops and filling stations or online purchase. For exploring by bike and on foot, the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference publishes detailed hiking maps and NYC Bike Maps charts the Big Apple's bike paths and lanes online. For getting round cities and towns, pick up a free map from the local tourist office or hotel concierge. For state, city and historical maps, check out the Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection at UT Library online. Not only are maps are a great travel planning resource, they're a great way to get kids involved in a family vacation.

Books are a great way to introduce young children to a new adventure and get teens and tweens ready for a family trip.
